Between 1916 and 1971 there were around 2080 graduates of the University of Malta. The courses were mainly aimed at supplying Malta with professional doctors, dentists, lawyers, pharmacists and also priests.  The number of graduates between 1971 and 1977 was nearly 2000. This year alone there are well over 2000 graduands who have read for around eighty different degrees. This gives some indication of how the University has changed and developed over the last years.

The University’s graduates have previously got together in faculty, department or course groups but there has never been an official overarching alumni association. The University is now the alma mater of over 30,000 living Maltese. These graduates work in all fields of economic activity in Malta and abroad and represent a significant body of knowledge and experience.  The University feels that an Alumni Association will help to galvanise this wonderful resource. The idea at this initial stage is to gain friends and pass on the message to graduates that their alma mater is a dynamic forward looking institution but one that still appreciates and admires the efforts of its former students.

In preparation for the launching of the Alumni Association, the University is organising two evenings aimed at gathering together alumni from the 1930s to 1970 on Thursday 30th, and alumni from 1971 to 1977 on Friday 31st October.  Both evenings will be held at the Old University Building, MITP theatre starting at 1930hrs. The reason for holding these gatherings at the Old University for these particular persons is that most of them passed all their university years in Valletta, while those who graduated up to 1977 spent at least the first year of their 6th form years at the Old University Building.

The evenings will include an exhibition of photographs of students over the period 1930 to 1977, set up by students from SACES, the Society of Architecture and Civil Engineering
Students, and during the receptions there will be an illustration of the website and information about the new database.

Through these evenings, the University will be drawing its alumni together to create an awareness of the upcoming Alumni Association; to encourage them to give their details online so that the new database can be populated with current information; to encourage them to pass the word to all graduates about the database; to help create a photographic archive of the University and to focus on the beautiful University building in Valletta.

All alumni who graduated up to 1977 are welcome and they are free to bring a guest.  However, the Communications & Alumni Relations Office would just like to be informed that they will be attending. Entrance is from the Courtyard on St Paul Street.

Clearly, the University has not forgotten its more recent graduates and intends to create other occasions for post-1977 graduates on campus at Msida.

A full list of graduates of the University of Malta 1916 to 1977 is available on the Alumni website. All alumni are invited to submit their details for entry in the alumni database by accessing the online form or by telephone or letter to: Ms Daphne Kelleher Tel.: 2340 2142 or Ms Angela Xuereb Tel.: 2340 2163, Communications & Alumni Relations Office, University of Malta, Msida, MSD 2080, Malta

Alumni 1937
(1937) Group includes Guzè Aquilina,Edward Coleiro, Joanna Bonaci (Degiorgio), the first female lawyer, Marcelle Galanopoulo (Zammit Tabona), one of Malta’s first female doctors, and Michele Tufigno.
