The Department of Chemistry of the University of Malta is launching two new three-year undergraduate courses, B.Sc.(Hons) Chemistry (a single honours chemistry degree) and B.Sc.(Hons) Chemistry with Materials (a chemistry degree 'with an engineering flavour'), which will be on offer as from October 2008, in addition to the traditional 'joint honours' degree.

The two new three-year B.Sc.(Hons) courses have been designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the facts and concepts pertaining to the practice of modern pure and applied chemistry, and training in experimental and problem-solving techniques. These courses provide the necessary academic background for a chemistry career and fulfil the requirements for postgraduate studies at Masters or Doctoral level in chemistry and related subjects. Graduates will acquire skills and competences suited to the implementation of applied chemistry and scientific methodology in general to research, industrial settings and teaching. The Special Course Requirements for both courses are an Advanced Level pass at Grade C or better in Chemistry and an Intermediate Level pass at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics or Physics.

Students may also register for the four-year B.Sc.(Hons) 'joint honours' degree offered by the Faculty of Science where Chemistry may be taken with Biology or Physics. This degree aims to produce science graduates with a joint honours degree in chemistry and another science subject. It provides the necessary academic background to enable students to pursue postgraduate studies at Masters or Doctoral level in chemistry and in the other subject or to work in research, industrial environments or teaching. The special course requirements for students registering for the ‘joint honours  in Chemistry and a second science subject (e.g. Biology, Physics etc) are an Advanced Level pass in Chemistry at Grade C or better and similar qualification in the second science subject as well as an Intermediate Level pass in Physics or Pure Mathematics.

Further information is available from the Department of Chemistry, tel. +356 2340 2275.
