The University of Malta and San Diego State University launch a new collaborative graduate degree ...

Marketing and Integrated Marketing Communications
University of Malta  - San Diego State University

A collaborative graduate degree programme in Marketing and Integrated Marketing Communications was announced at a press conference held at the Foundation for International Studies, Valletta, hosted by Professor Juanito Camilleri, Rector of the University of Malta, and attended by the Hon. Dr Louis Galea, Minister of Education, Youth and Employment, H.E. Ms Molly Bordonaro, Ambassador of the United States of America, and Professor Kathleen Krentler from San Diego State University.

This collaborative Master’s programme with San Diego State University is the second in a series of dual Masters programmes to be launched by the University of Malta in cooperation with leading North American universities, after the launch of the MSc in Sustainable Environmental Resources Management in December 2007.

The collaborative graduate degree programme in Marketing and Integrated Marketing Communications seeks to provide the tools for the evolving market realities. Today’s communications environment presents many challenges to managers as they work with their partners to create marketing communications programmes that are strategically on target and maximize their productivity and impact. This programme is designed to help managers understand the rapidly evolving world of marketing and communications and to learn how various IMC tools such as advertising, public relations, the internet and interactive media, direct and database marketing, and social media can be combined most effectively to meet an organisation’s marketing communication needs.

The cooperation between the University of Malta and San Diego State University in the area of Marketing and Marketing Communications has been ongoing for a few years. The dual programme has been created to respond to developments in the way contemporary marketers are communicating with current and prospective customers. Formal academic programmes in IMC represent a new trend that is taking root among schools of Business and Communications in the United States. These programmes are being offered only at a few select universities in the U.S.  In Europe, the Centre for Communication Technology at the University of Malta was among the first EU institutions to offer such a Masters programme when the first group joined in 2001. The concept of a dual degree represents a development of the original concept at the Centre for Communication Technology, which has found the full support of the University Rector, Prof. Juanito Camilleri.  H.E. Ms. Molly Bordonaro the American Ambassador to Malta has been a strong supporter of the process which led to the realisation of this joint American-Maltese venture.

Minister Louis Galea welcomed the creation of such partnerships by the University of Malta describing them as key steps in the development of higher education in the country. Such projects were bound to attract the interest of higher education and prestigious research institutions, as well as international students to Malta and increase research opportunities for the Maltese, he said.  Minister Galea thanked everyone involved in the project.

The collaborative graduate degree programme in Marketing and Integrated Marketing Communications will be offered as from September 2008. Further information about this degree may be obtained by writing to or by accessing the International Master's Programmes website.

The University of Malta is marketing this dual degree programme under its new “International Masters Programmes” (IMPs) brand.  The IMPs provide the umbrella to market a series of dual Masters Programmes to be taught in Malta. It is envisaged that degrees marketed under the IMP brand will attract students from a broad range of countries. Such degree programmes will bring together faculty and resources of partner institutions and will lead to the award of degrees that are recognised and respected both in the European Union and in North America. The degrees being launched address the demand for innovative expertise and problem solving skills on a variety of contemporary issues in the face of emerging globalisation. Today, decision makers have to draw upon a range of traditional areas of knowledge to provide practical solutions in real-world scenarios. Degree programmes organised under the IMPs brand will also seek to draw real-world case-studies from a Euro-Mediterranean perspective. The teaching of these degree programmes will be principally housed in the old building of the University of Malta in Valletta, the historic campus of the university built in 1598. Plans are underway to start renovating parts of this building to incorporate state-of-the-art instructional technology, a suitably resourced library, and other supporting facilities.
