Annual Presentation of Awards 2008 by the Department of Accountancy, FEMA, University of Malta

On the evening of Wednesday 30th April, the Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy held this year’s presentation of awards to the Bachelor of Accountancy (Hons) 2005/2007 graduate group at Erin Serracino Inglott Hall.  After an introduction by the Head of Department, Mr Peter J Baldacchino, fourteen different awards – including three additional ones this year- were announced by the Rector Prof Juanito Camilleri and presented by ten sponsors which were the Malta Institute of Accountants, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, the Central Co-operative Fund, six international accountancy firms, and for the first time this year, the National Audit Office.   Each award winner made an interesting synopsis to those present of his/her study, and also presented a copy of the study to their sponsor.

The Malta Institute of Accountants Best Student of the Year Prize as well as the Deloitte & Touche Prize for best dissertation in Taxation were awarded to Mr David Busuttil, whose dissertation was titled "The Fiscal Incentives Provided by Malta for the Carrying Out of Research and Development in Malta –An In-Depth Evaluation".

This year’s CIMA Prize was awarded to Ms Lorraine Abela for her dissertation "Evaluating Standard Costing Systems and Variance Analysis Procedures in the Local Pharmaceutical and Medical Supplies Industries". On the other hand, the Cooperative Societies prize was awarded to Mr Herman Baldacchino for his dissertation "Maltese Cooperatives and their Use of the Accountancy Profession Services".

The Ernst & Young Prize in Financial Reporting was awarded to Ms Rachelle Briffa for her dissertation "The Importance and Usefulness of the Different Sections of the Annual Report to the Various Interested Parties in Local Listed Companies – An Investigation". Grant Thornton presented their Maltese Law Prize to Mr Justin Chircop for his research study "The Impact on Maltese Listed Companies of the Regulatory Framework on Related Party Transactions: An Evaluation". The KPMG Prize in Financial Accounting was awarded to Mr Noel Bezzina for his "Revisiting the EU Endorsement Process of IFRSs in view of the Forthcoming ISA Adoption- Local Perspectives and Suggestions". A second KPMG Prize, this time in Internal Auditing, was awarded to Ms Graziella Cassar for her study "Rotation within the Maltese Internal Audit Environment and Its Implications: An Evaluation". PricewaterhouseCoopers also presented its annual two prizes – one in External Auditing, which was awarded to Ms Jana Azzopardi for her dissertation "Materiality in Maltese Statutory Auditing: An Evaluation"; and the other one, relating to Not-for-Profit Organisations, to Mr Mark Adrian Bonello for his work "A Review of the Financial Reporting Changes Within Gozitan Football Clubs – The Quest for Improved Accountability". The RSM Malta Prize for best dissertation in Finance was awarded to Ms Charisse Cuschieri for her work "EU Funding for Oil Spill Recovery: A Financial Evaluation of the Malta-Based Alternatives".    

The three new prizes this year were also presented - one for the best dissertation in Public Sector Auditing sponsored by the National Audit Office: this was awarded to Ms Charlene Brincat  for her  dissertation "Weaknesses Disclosed in the Maltese State Audit Report: A Five-Year Analysis". A second prize was awarded by Deloitte & Touche, this time for the best dissertation relating to the Accountancy Profession; Ms Marie Claire Tabone earned this for her dissertation "The Market for Newly Qualified Accountants in Maltese Professional Firms-An Analysis". A new Ernst & Young prize in Corporate Governance  was also awarded to Ms Louana  Borg for her dissertation "The Current Roles and Functions of Audit Committees in Maltese Listed Companies: An Assessment".
