A book by Noel Caruana-DingliLes livres français de Malte. Bibliothèques, langues et société (XVIIIe siècle) by Dr Noel Caruana Dingli is a welcome addition to the few books that have been published about French culture in Malta. This new book fills a void and sheds a new light on a particular aspect of the history of the French language on these islands. The author, a Senior Lecturer and French Co-ordinator at the Faculty of Education of the University of Malta, is well-known as a researcher in the field for the past 22 years.

Les livres français de Malte is the first publication to explore in depth the readership of French books in 18th-century Malta. At the time, French was still considered to be the “universal language” of the European elites. The first chapter of this 668-page book (which has a charming Preface by Prof. Louis Porcher, of the Sorbonne) presents a general overview of the linguistic situation in Malta at the time. It also describes the French community of Malta.  Other chapters are about the book trade in Malta and the French books belonging to members of various sections of Maltese society. The private book collections of the foreign aristocracy (the Knights of Malta) and the Maltese nobility are discussed in two separate chapters. Besides the French books owned by the “average” member of the Order of St John, the author also explores the vast libraries belonging to well-known collectors  and the contents of collective libraries such as the Camerata and the Biblioteca. The final chapter which is about the teaching of French in Malta should be of particular interest to all teachers of French who would like to know more about the history of their profession.
Les livres français de Malte is based almost entirely on primary sources (that were consulted in 18 French and Maltese archives), especially probate inventories, wills, library catalogues, Inquisition proceedings etc. Certain information (e.g. the analysis of the entire stock of books belonging to Jean Audran, a French bookseller in Valletta) is being published for the first time. This specialised French book should therefore attract a limited readership even in Malta. It should appeal especially to collectors of Melitensia and to readers who would like to know which French books were available locally in the distant past.
