Annual Presentation of Awards 2009 by the Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Economics, Management & Accountancy, University of Malta

On Wednesday 29 April, the University of Malta’s Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy, held this year’s presentation of awards to the Bachelor of Accountancy (Hons) 2006/2008 graduate group at Erin Serracino Inglott Hall.  After an introduction by the Head of Department, Mr Peter J Baldacchino, thirteen different awards were announced by the Faculty Dean, Dr Saviour Gauci. The Rector, Professor Juanito Camilleri congratulated the award winners who were then presented awards by nine sponsors: the Malta Institute of Accountants, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Central Co-operative Fund and six international accountancy firms. Each award winner presented a copy of the study to their sponsor.

The Malta Institute of Accountants Best Student of the Year Prize was awarded to Mr Roderick Camilleri, who spoke about his experience as an accountancy student.

 This year’s CIMA prize was awarded to Ms Bernice Balzan for her dissertation “The Implementation of the Balanced Scorecard Approach in a Local Four Star Hotel”.

The Cooperative Societies prize was awarded to Ms Maria Borg for her dissertation    “The Applicability of the European Co-operative Set-up in Malta and its Financial Implications”.

Mr Kenneth Bugeja won the Deloitte prize for best dissertation in Information Technology “Financial Reporting Using XBRL: An Evaluation of its Need and the Willingness of Businesses to Apply the System in Malta. The other Deloitte prize, that for best dissertation on the Accountancy Profession, was awarded to Mr Andre’ Gialanze. The title of his dissertation was “The Distance between the Accountant and the Entrepreneur: An Analysis of the Fit Between Accounting Information and Entrepreneurial Characteristics”.

This year, Ernst & Young again awarded two prizes, one on Financial Reporting and on Corporate Governance. The former was won by Mr George Attard for his dissertation "The Importance of the Objectives and Qualitative Characteristics of Accounting Information within the Maltese Context: An Investigation"; the Corporate Governance Award was won by Ms Stephania Frendo for her "Financial Executive Remuneration Schemes and their Financial and Corporate Governance Implications in Maltese PLCs."

The KPMG Financial Accounting prize was won by Ms Valerie Debattista for her dissertation "The Perception of Shareholders With Regard to Cash Flow Accounting", while Ms Karensa Zammit won the KPMG Internal Auditing prize for her dissertation "The Policing and the Value-Adding Functions in Maltese Internal Auditing: An Evaluation of the Evolving Balance."

The RSM Malta prize in Finance was awarded to Ms Melanie Fleri Soler for her dissertation "The Feasibility of Running a Physiotherapy Facility in Malta."

The Not-For-Profit Organisations award sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers was awarded to Ms Phyllis Gauci whose dissertation was "An Extension of the Existing Facilities at the Malta Hospice Movement: A Feasibility Study Based on Current Demand." The other PWC prize was that of External Auditing, this was won by Mr Christopher Albert Cardona whose dissertation "Factors Influencing First-Time External Auditor Selection in Maltese Companies: An Analysis" which was also the best dissertation for the year. Mr Cardona presented an interesting synopsis of the study to those present.

Finally the Grant Thornton prize for Maltese Law was not awarded for a dissertation, but to the two students with the highest examination marks in the subject: Mr Josef Abela and Ms AnnMarie Farrugia.

After the presentation of the awards Professor Juanito Camilleri, Rector made a concluding speech about the University's projected strategy relating to the department.
