The University of Malta’s Institute for Sustainable Energy is once again offering three different courses aimed at training solar installers, engineers and architects in the fields of solar heating and solar photovoltaic (PV) system installations (single and three phase systems).

Following the successful experience of the previous runs, a change has been made to the minimum pre-requisite qualification for Single-Phase Photovoltaic Systems. Prospective candidates who have a Level 4 MQF qualification in a relevant field of study and a minimum of 2 years experience in PV installations, can now apply for the single-phase PV course ISE2101, provided that they hold a valid Wireman’s Licence A (Authorisation A). This special pre-requisite is valid until 31st December 2012, after which the pre-requisite will be increased to a Level 5 MQF qualification and Wireman Licence (Authorisation A).

The courses have been tailor-made to provide all the necessary information and training for installers to reach a high level of competence for installing solar systems in Malta. The courses on photovoltaics are being organised jointly with the Department of Industrial Power Conversion of the Faculty of Engineering.  The courses are accredited by the University of Malta and have been endorsed by the Malta Resources Authority. Candidates who obtain at least Grade B (70%) shall be eligible to apply for an installer’s certification from the Malta Resources Authority, in line with the requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directive 2009/28/EC, which stipulates that all Member States must have an installer’s certification scheme or equivalent qualification schemes by 31st December 2012.

The courses also aim at providing essential information to designers, builders and building services engineers, so that they can plan ahead for the inclusion of solar systems in new and renovated buildings. These courses fulfil some of the exigencies of the EU Energy Performance in Buildings Directive 2010/31/EU, to provide guidance and training to all those involved in the building sector, improve energy performance of buildings and successfully implement methodologies that guarantee optimal combination of energy efficiency, use of energy from renewable sources, when planning, designing, building and renovating industrial or residential buildings.

Local sponsors who have donated equipment to support the development of these courses include Bajada Group, BMS Ltd, Energy Investment Ltd, Solar Solutions Ltd and ALX Services Ltd.

Application forms may be downloaded from the Institute’s website between 1 and 16 December 2011 and the courses are scheduled to start in February 2012. For further information, please contact Eur. Ing. Charles Yousif at the Institute for Sustainable Energy.
