The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Malta was honoured with a visit by President  George Abela.  The President received a warm welcome from the Rector, Prof. Juanito Camilleri, the Dean of the Faculty, Dr Ing. John Betts, Engineering staff and students. The President was then presented with the 'Freedom of the Faculty’, symbolised by a magnetic access card.

In his introduction to the audience the Dean drew parallels between the human qualities required of the President and those required of engineers, who have to be persons of integrity, attentive to what is happening around them and who need great courage in their profession. This sentiment was echoed by the newly-elected University Engineering Students’ Association (U.E.S.A.) President, Mr Malcolm Zammit, who explained how the challenges faced during the students’ years of study help to enrich their personality with an ability for perseverance, determination and responsibility. The U.E.S.A. President went on to praise the staff for their constant support and availability in this important formative stage in their life.

The Faculty wished to show its appreciation of the philanthropic aspect of the Office of the President. The staff and students at the Faculty of Engineering therefore contributed towards a monetary gift presented to President Abela towards the Community Chest Fund.

Over the past years, the Faculty of Engineering has successfully attracted funding for its research facilities. This has led to an astounding increase in national and international research authored by Faculty of Engineering staff and students. The President was presented with tangible and weighty proof of the extent of research being pursued, in the form of three bound volumes, compiling more than 120 international publications produced over the past two years by the Faculty. This was also made possible by the steep increase in the enrolment of postgraduate students - a total of 75 currently registered for masters and doctoral programmes - representing a 25% increase over the past year. Together with the 400 students enrolled at undergraduate level, these will continue to strengthen the national commitment to technological development and to the attainment of research and development targets. The Faculty has produced a contribution proportionately well above the investment made. It was pointed out that with an increased financial outlay, even greater levels of success may be attained in engineering research and competitive commercial applications.

During the President’s tour of a number of well-equipped laboratories within the Faculty of Engineering, one could see the diversity and the interdisciplinary nature of ongoing research work with a strong link to Industry.  President George Abela operated a haptic feedback system, developed at the Biomedical Engineering lab, which can be used for the rehabilitation of patients recovering from stroke. Specialised medical equipment including motion cameras, thermal imagers and eye-gaze trackers were also on display, together with an experimental set-up used to interface electrical brain signals to computers. The President was then shown around the Energy Conversion and Power Quality Laboratory. Here the focus was on electrical motor drives, electrical energy efficiency in domestic and industrial applications, power quality and renewable energy generation – all critical factors towards becoming a greener nation, less dependent on non-renewable energies. The President finally visited the Robotics and Industrial Automation Laboratory (RIAL) where he was given a demonstration of the operation of one of the industrial robots and shown the application of the robot in a research project carried out in collaboration with Industry.

The Faculty showcases all its laboratories which are open to the public during its annual Final Year Projects Exhibition in June.
