Underground Valletta Tour (7 Mar.)

Following the success of last Saturday’s tour of underground Valletta, on Saturday 7 March, Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA) will give its members another opportunity to tour the rock-hewn tunnel that links the Auberge de Castille to the Auberge d’Italie, where the knights’ passages and cellars were incorporated into Valletta’s World War II network of tunnels.

The guided tour will start from the 16th-Century undercroft of the Auberge d’Italie in Merchants’ Street and proceed to the historic vaults of the Auberge de Castille via the British 1941 tunnel. Sealed for almost six decades since the 1950s, the tunnels’ thick rock walls are etched with dates, masons’ marks and graffiti symbols, while water trickling through the rock has over the years covered the ceilings with tiny stalactites.

Since this is a very popular and limited event that can only take up to 50 persons, FAA members are being given priority booking until Friday 27 February.

Seminar on Contemplation (20-21, 28 Feb.)

Date: 20-21, 28 February 2015
Venue: Carmelite Priory Mdina
Price: Free (Registration needed)

The word “contemplation” seems to put some people in two different reactions. One is indifference: claiming that contemplation is religious people closed behind closed doors and gates; the other panic: claiming that one could never achieve a high state of sanctity here on earth as the saints did. Clearly, many people seem to think that contemplation is really not for them. This seminar will seek to strip this word back to its roots, whilst exploring how this word – or rather, “attitude” – is understood in Carmelite Spirituality.

Moreover, the intention of this seminar is to make those in attendance aware that even in those circumstances where we might think contemplation does not feature, the Carmelite mind joins the invisible dots between God and man, such that this transforms the heart and sees the world evermore with God’s eyes.

The seminar will feature readings and interpretations of fundamental Carmelite texts such as Carmelite Rule, Institution of First Monks, ven. John of St Samson and br. Lawrence of the Resurrection.

This seminar will be conducted in either Maltese or English (depending on audience)

Speakers: Glen Attard O.Carm. & Ivan Scicluna O.Carm.
