Geoscience: Bridging the Worlds of Academia, Society and Governance will be held on Friday 8 February, from 08:30 to 13:30 at Salini Resort, St Paul’s Bay.
Contributions by the Department of Geosciences
Faculty of Science
University of Malta
Our marine, terrestrial and atmospheric environments are inextricably linked to the economic and social dimensions of the country. Fundamental knowledge about these environments is essential for the management of our resources, mitigation of damage from natural hazards, well informed and planned development, and the general understanding of the behaviour and changing nature of our planet and our immediate surroundings.
The Department of Geosciences, founded in 2015 within the Faculty of Science, is continuing and strengthening its research and monitoring activities in various areas of the geosciences, carrying out academic research, but also providing a number of services and data acquisition in atmospheric monitoring and air quality, oceanography and maritime observations, geophysics, seismology, marine geology and seafloor surveying.
The Department has now also embarked on its teaching role by launching an undergraduate degree in Geosciences, thus ensuring a scientifically trained and skilled graduate workforce that will provide an essential contribution to society and the governing authorities.

In this seminar, we shall present a wide range of studies, activities and results by members of the department, seeking to explain our various roles, and initiate a discussion about the interaction between the geosciences, modern society and national requirements. We aim to communicate the importance of the geosciences, not only in the research and academic aspects, but in their application to present-day issues, and in a healthy two-way interaction between academic effort and the various elements of society and governance.
Participation is free of charge, however, for organisational purposes, please register by sending an email janice.zerafa@um.edu.mt
