Event: Minn ta’ min int? Analiżi Lingwistika tal-Laqam Personali
Date: 17 December 2019
Time: 18:00
Place: Faculty of Arts Library, UM Msida Campus
Abigail Deguara will be addressing a public talk titled 'Minn ta’ min int? Analiżi Lingwistika tal-Laqam Personali'. She will be going into the various nicknames given to Maltese individuals and family members, which are often derived from older generations and eventually get passed down from one child to another. A number of studies have been conducted about such nicknames, however they do not really dive into the technicalities behind the language, which ultimately forms them.
With this motive in mind, Ms Deguara will be presenting her findings which form part of her Bachelor's thesis, focusing on the linguistic perspectives, the way these nicknames came to be, while also classifying them against a number of criteria. Hence, this talk will not only give general information about this important strand of Maltese culture, but will also hone in on the various elements behind their creation.
