Malta suffers from one of the highest rates of diabetes in Europe. One costly symptom of the disease comes in the form of diabetic foot ulcers – chronic open sores susceptible to bacterial infection which often lead to over 100 amputations per year on the island alone. Prof. Joseph Borg has a stellar solution to advance diabetics research and clinical capabilities: launch biological samples in a capsule aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Suspended 400 km above Earth, the experiment is designed to test the limits of the most resilient, problem-causing bacteria and detect genetic mutations to improve patient prognoses. Through the programme known as Project Maleth, Prof. Borg is eager to aid people suffering from diabetes, but the project’s medical implications aren’t its only significance. Project Maleth marks the first ever Maltese experimental involvement in space, a feat establishing Malta’s research competitiveness while bolstering the country’s international perception and paving the way for future international collaborations.
Join Malta Café Scientifique on Wednesday 10 November, 19:00 at Spazju Kreattiv for an exciting and multifaceted talk with Prof Borg. Please book using this link for a small donation of just EUR 3.
