The Institute of Maltese Studies with the support of the Valletta Cultural Agency cordially invite you to a Public Lecture: The Maltese and La Commedia Dell’Arte. In their daily jargon, the Maltese unconsciously use names of characters and expressions from the Late Renaissance theatre tradition of Commedia dell'Arte.
This theme will be explored by Dr Sir Narcy Calamatta KM.
About Dr Sir Narcy Calamatta KM
Dr Calamatta is a perennial student. At the age of 49 in 1988 he followed a Malta University Bachelor of Arts Course in Theatre Studies and Communications.
In 1990, in New York, the Grandmaster of the Knights of Malta Federation of Autonomous Priories installed him as a Knight Commander. He is still active and in 2020 was appointed as Vice- Prior of the Arts and Culture Priory of the K.M.F.A.P.
In 1997 he invited Commedia dell’Arte master, Jaume Villalba Sanchez to come to Malta for two months to teach Maltese actors the style of Commedia dell’Arte. Since then Calamatta has written four Commedia farces, which were performed all over Malta in theatres and as street theatre, as well as in Germany and in Israel.
Calamatta published his plays and a dissertation on Commedia dell’Arte in a book in English and a translation of the same in Maltese.
In 2021 he was awarded a doctorate teaching degree based on his 4 academic publications by the Pro Deo State University of Miami, Florida, USA.
Dr Sir Narcy Calamatta KM has established himself in Malta as an authority in cultural and artistic communication in television, films and theatre. He is currently polishing a film script he wrote and doing pre-production for an international feature film, which he will direct.

After the Public Lecture, those present are invited for a Vin d’Honneur. Attendance will need to be confirmed by sending an email by Friday 3 February 2023.
