On Friday, October 16, from 18:00 to 21:00, a wide-ranging conference in Maltese on the Translation Tradition in Malta, 'It-Tradizzjoni tat-Traduzzjoni,' is being held at the Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa (Birgu). This event is free of charge and open to the general public. The talks will be followed by light refreshments.
This conference brings together experts and practitioners from the fields of translation theory, literature, linguistics, law, Bible studies, and the institutions of the European Union. The speakers include three University of Malta lecturers, Prof. Clare Vassallo from Translation studies, Rev. Dr Paul Sciberras from Bible Studies, and Dr Albert Gatt from Linguistics. The other speakers are Dr Helga Zahra, Jeantide Naudi and novelist Mark A. Vella from the European Union institutions, and legal procurator Victor Cauchi.
The conference is being organised by the voluntary cultural organization Inizjamed and the Department of Maltese in the General Directorate of the European Commission. This event is part of the Translating for Europe Workshop (#TranslatingEurope).
Inizjamed organizes an annual residential literary translation workshop for writers participating in the Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival. This workshop, which is now in its eleventh year, is held in collaboration with Literature Across Frontiers. Inizjamed has published two books of literary translations into Maltese carried out during the Festival.
The conference will be opened by the Hon. Evarist Bartolo, Minister for Education and Employment.
