The Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts presents a talk entitled 'Extinction and Death'. The speaker is Dr Christopher Belshaw, Senior Lecturer at The Open University. The talk will be delivered on Friday 13 November from 17:30 to 19:30 at the Faculty of Arts Library.
Abstract
Many people think a bad thing will happen if our species becomes extinct. But is this true? And how is it to be explained? The argument here is that extinction is bad for us more or less as death is bad for us. In some circumstances, however, death isn’t bad for us. And the argument continues, extinction might be good for us roughly as death might be good for us.
