The Department of Italian within the Faculty of Arts of the University of Malta, in collaboration with 'Cinema Nuovo Italiano' and the 'Istituto Italiano di Cultura' in Valletta, is proud to announce the screening of Biagio (2014) by the award-winning filmmaker Pasquale Scimeca. The film has won the Green Movie Award and the Social Critic Award 'Sorriso Diverso', among other international prizes.
Biagio will be screened for the first time in Malta on Saturday 5 December 2015 at 18:30 at the Auditorium, University of Malta Valletta Campus, St Paul Street, Valletta. The film is English subtitled.
Biagio will be introduced by Pasquale Scimeca. A discussion will follow the screening.
The movie recounts the true and poignantly moving story of Biagio Conte, the Sicilian lay missionary from Palermo, born in 1963. In the early 1990s, Biagio Conte sells everything he owns and leaves his well-off family to set out on a special journey in search of the meaning of life. Living in poverty, this second Francis of Assisi carries out his seemingly restless quest from the mountains to the seaside. Biagio Conte ends up exactly in Assisi, finally finding peace of mind. But has he found God?
Among Scimeca’s best-known films are Il giorno di San Sebastiano (1993), Placido Rizzotto (2000), La passione di Giosuè l’Ebreo (2005), and Malavoglia (2010).
Refreshments will be served after the screening. This will give the public the opportunity to meet with Pasquale Scimeca over a glass of wine.
The general public is cordially invited to the screening. Entrance is free. Reservation is not mandatory but seating is limited, so if you would like to reserve a seat, please contact Ms Yanica Cassar on +356 2340 2309 or send an email.
