Design Thinking
Prof. Lawrence Hanley
The topic of the talk is 'Design Thinking'. This term has become a buzzword that is widely misused and often misunderstood. Prof Hanley has been involved in teaching and developing this subject for 40 years and will present some practical strategies that will help design practitioners to develop their own abilities in tackling design problems and the production of solutions to them.
Professor Lawrence Hanley studied Graphic Design and Typography at the London College of Communication - UAL and after graduating in 1971, started a London based design practice. He started lecturing part-time at the London College of communication in 1973 and in 1975 moved to Sydney, Australia where he became a Senior Lecturer in a new college of design, which is now the Design and Architecture Faculty of the University of Technology, Sydney. While lecturing at UTS, Lawrence Hanley also worked continuously on design projects, mainly the field of large format book design, mostly to do with natural & human history.
In 1982 he started to work as a consultant with UNESCO in Paris and became involved in design projects, lectures and workshops around the globe. From 1984-1990 he concentrated on his own work, which was very broad and included magazine and book publishing, packaging, posters, restaurants, signage and some theme parks.
In 1990 Lawrence Hanley founded The Sydney Graphics College, in answer to the arrival of digital graphic design which was rapidly transforming the industry. SCG offered courses at Bachelor and Post-Graduate level studies. After 15 years as Principal Lecturer, he sold the college and now spends his time making art, adventure traveling, mentoring and generally having serious fun. generally having serious fun.
