The Order of the Hospital and its surrender of Malta, 1798
The talk will deal with the decline theory, the fall of Hospitaller Malta in 1798, and the attribution of the surrender of the Order's island state to Hospitaller decline.
Victor Mallia-Milanes is Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Malta, where he is a former head of the History Department and dean of the Faculty of Arts. He has published extensively on the history of Venice, the Order of St John, and Malta in the early modern period. His most recent works include ‘Al Servizio della Repubblica di Venezia: Le Lettere di Massimiliano Buzzaccarini Gonzaga, Commendatore di Malta, inviate alla Magistratura dei Cinque Savii alla Mercanzia 1754-1776’, published by the Libreria Editrice Vaticana in 2014. In 2016 the Sovereign Council of the Order of Malta made him Commander 'Pro Merito Melitensi'.
