The Annual Company Law Conference organised jointly by the Department of Commercial Law at the University of Malta and the Malta Law Academy, a foundation of the Chamber of Advocates, is with us again. The two entities will be joining forces to hold this Annual Company Law Conference, now a fixed event of the academic calendar which has proved popular with legal practitioners, law students, accountants, auditors, company officials and others involved i limited liability companies in Malta. The activity will be chaired by Dr David Fabri, Head of the Department of Commercial Law, and will be will be held on Wednesday, 2 November from 13:00 to 18:00, at the Auditorium, University of Malta, Valletta Campus.
The opening address of the Conference will be delivered by the Hon. Prof Edward Scicluna, Minister for Finance.
After introducing the speakers and the topics of the afternoon, Dr Fabri will give a brief talk on regulatory developments in the field of Commercial Law. The next speaker Dr Conrad Portanier will explore Maltese law provisions relating to squeeze-out of minority shareholders, and he shall suggest proposals for reform. Dr Ivan Vella will talk about the practical application of article 402(3) (g) of the Companies Act and possible stalemate among members. Prof Andrew Muscat will be examining in some detail the general duties and responsibilities of Company Directors and he shall be sharing his insights on recent decided cases. His talk will be divided in two parts, one on either side of the coffee break. Dr Neville Gatt’s presentation will tackle recent relevant developments in EU Company Law while Dr Kris Borg will be reviewing the latest company law court decisions and interpretations given by our courts. Dr George Hyzler, President of the Chamber, shall deliver the closing address.
