The Institute of Digital Games will host the Malta Global Game Jam 2017 from 20 to 22 January 2017.
The Game Jam brings together local and international game designers, programmers, 3D artists, illustrators and other creative people to make innovative games in just 48 hours. Local participants jam simultaneously with some 25,000 others in hundreds of locations worldwide.
The two-day game-dev marathon starts on Friday afternoon, 20 January, with a keynote on Poetic Design by Alexis Kennedy, critically acclaimed writer and game designer. He was the founder and creative director of Failbetter Games, where he was the instigator of Fallen London and Sunless Sea, among other things. Sunless Sea won Rock Paper Shotgun’s Best Bestest Words in Gaming 2014, and was shortlisted for the Writer’s Guild of Great Britain Best Writing in a Videogame 2016. Alexis has subsequently been announced as the first ever guest writer for both Paradox and BioWare, and is developing an experimental game, Cultist Simulator. Other special guests will be announced on the website soon!
Proceedings conclude on Sunday afternoon with a games showcase where participants play each other’s games and vote for their favourite one. Local industry professionals will also be on hand throughout the Jam to offer their insight and support to participants.
The focus of the Game Jam is creativity and collaboration and is open to everyone, from games industry professionals, to established independent developers, to amateurs who have never made a game before. It’s also a great breeding ground for new IP; games developed during previous local editions have been successfully published, featured internationally, and funded on Kickstarter.
Registration is EUR 30 and places are strictly limited. For more information and to register, head to Malta Game Jam.
