On Wednesday 22 February at 18:30, Dr Dennis Mizzi (senior lecturer in Hebrew and Ancient Judaism at the University of Malta) will talk about what has been hailed as 'the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century' — the Dead Sea Scrolls. These comprise several collections of Jewish texts found around the Dead Sea region and dating from the late third century BCE to the early second century CE. The most celebrated of these collections are the Qumran Dead Sea Scrolls, with which the name has become synonymous. Here, over nine hundred manuscripts containing biblical and other religious literature were found in eleven caves. In this lecture, Dr Mizzi will present a general overview on the Scrolls from Qumran while also highlighting what they have taught us seventy years since their discovery.
The talk will be held at the Archaeology Centre (Car Park 6), University of Malta, Msida Campus.
