Are we developed? A sociological look at Malta's development
Noel Agius
So often economic growth is presumed to be another phrase for 'development'.
Malta has been experiencing economic growth to the extent that many would no longer consider the country, 'undeveloped, third world or simply poor'. At the same time however, poverty is on the rise, public space is getting swallowed by speculative building projects, educational levels are still low as is female participation in the work force. These are just some of the contradictions of today's Malta.
Noel Agius is lecturer in sociology at Junior College.
