The Department of International Relations will be hosting a public lecture by Professor Simone Borg, entitled 'UN Climate Negotiations: Where are we now?'
The lecture will take place on Monday 27 November from 15:00 to 17:00 in Room 264 Gateway Building (GW264) at the University of Malta, Msida Campus. The event is free of charge and open to the general public.
Prof. Simone Borg LL.D, LL.M. (Int law), Ph.D (IMLI) is a resident academic at the University of Malta, where she is currently Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Laws and head of the Department of Environmental and Resources law. She started her career as a diplomat with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malta and then headed the Multilateral Department within the Ministry of the Environment. She was Malta’s chief negotiator in International Environmental Multilateral Agreements from 1991 to 2004 during which time frame she also drafted national environmental legislation and policy making. She coordinated the transposition of the environmental acquis communautaire before EU membership. During Malta’s tenure of the Presidency of the European Council, as Malta’s head of delegation, she chaired the EU group on climate negotiations.
Simone Borg also works as a freelance legal expert on climate law and environmental law in various projects with the European Union, the United Nations, academic networks and IUCN. She was appointed Malta’s Ambassador for Climate Change in 2010. She is currently one of the experts on the European Union’s Horizon 2020 SC 5 Advisory Group on climate action. She chairs the Climate Action Board which is responsible for monitoring implementation of climate action targets within the public sector and promoting initiatives within the private sector in Malta. Prof Borg has published books as well as many articles and papers on environmental law, climate change law and ocean governance.
