The histories of Lampedusa and Malta appear to be intertwined since Neolithic times, and yet the two islands seem to have drifted apart in recent years, at least in their perspective of each other. On one side of the short distance of 90 nautical miles, Malta is strongly engrained in the modern history of Lampedusa, since the island was repopulated by Maltese families after 1803. On the other shore, beyond the fishing industry and niche tourism, the nearby Pelagian archipelago barely features in the Maltese geographic conscience. This research workshop, hosted by the Mediterranean Institute, aims to bridge the cultural distance between the two islands through comparative studies encompassing various disciplines.
This research workshop will take place mainly in Italian.
