'Elder Abuse: Physically Restraint within Maltese Care Homes' is the title of the next brown-bag seminar organised by the Faculty for Social Wellbeing Research, Publications and Scholarship Committee. The seminar is presented by Prof. Marvin Formosa & Dr Maria Aurora Fenech of the Department of Gerontology.
The seminar will be held on Wednesday 23 May from 12:30 to 14:00 in Room 420 FEMA Building, University of Malta Msida Campus.
Abstract
This seminar aims to highlight the issue of elder abuse with a direct focus on physical restrain within Maltese care homes for older persons. Objectives include the identification of the types of physical restraint devices used within care homes, and the construction of a profile of the procedures documenting restraint use. The seminar reports on the results of a mixed-method research tool to investigate the use of physical restraining in Maltese care homes. Results indicated that the most commonly used restraints were ‘full bed rails’ (83.8%), ‘belt harness’ (54.9%), and ‘H/T-harnesses’ (both 49.7%).
The study adds to the body of knowledge around processes underlying restraint use - namely in the (a) recommending, (b) explaining, and (c) monitoring/removing of restraint.
