in collaboration with the Science Students Society (S-Cubed)
- Do Maltese bays and inlets have high levels of microplastics?
- What are the effects of invasion by alien land plants on terrestrial habitats?
- Does extract from tissue of the Bay Laurel and of the Tree of Heaven kill cancer cells?
- What are the effects of tuna farming on bottom habitats in local coastal waters?
- How are molecular genetics techniques used to identify insects?
- What is the conservation status of the endemic freshwater crab in local streams?
- Is the local population of the edible sea urchin in decline; and if so can this be due to global climate change?
- What are the ecological characteristics of deep water anemones and sea pens in local coastal waters?
- Do marine shore species erode rock during feeding?
- What type of vegetation characterises the Inwadar National Park; and can butterflies be used to monitor the state of habitats in this park?
- How is the population of the alien formaminiferan Amphistegina sp. faring in local coastal waters?
- Are there large amounts of litter on the seabed in deep waters around the Maltese Islands?
- What is the role of microbes in deterioration of plastics?
- How are microalgae responding to climate change?
These and other questions will be addressed by this year’s graduands at the Annual Biology Symposium, which will be held on Saturday 1 December 2018 in Gateway Hall E at the University of Malta Msida Campus.
Each year, the symposium serves to showcase the findings from research projects undertaken by undergraduate (B.Sc.) and postgraduate (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) students at the Department of Biology within the Faculty of Science at the University of Malta.
Registration for the event will be open on the day at 08:30.
The symposium is of interest to sixth form and university students taking up biology, governmental and non-governmental organisations that deal with aspects of the environment, and professionals working in environmental consultancy, planning and management. This year’s Biology Symposium in sponsored by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).
Copies of the Symposium Abstracts Booklet and the programme will be available on the day during registration. Further information on the event can be obtained by contacting Ms Michaela Psaila Custo at the Department of Biology on +356 2340 2272 or by sending an email.
