Programme for this year's Evenings on Campus
Motus in Malta
26 July - 12 August
venue: University of Malta, Msida Campus
This year, Evenings on Campus will be hosting an outdoor photographic exhibition by Belgian photographer Jim Sumkay, with the title 'Motus in Malta', Malta being the latest country in his 'Motus' series.
Jim Sumkay has always had a passion for words, especially in French. During his short stay in Malta earlier this year, he took this theme and through his lens froze actions and brought words to life - words on signs, adverts, and other kinds of messages in his spontaneous photography. Everyday images that he turns into art through his wry humour and his empathy. Since 2005, Jim Sumkay is the artist behind 'No Comment', a daily photographic report that he sends to his correspondents, and that consists in an archive of more than 80,000 photographs.
Jim Sumkay was born on 3 March, 1954 in Liège, Belgium.

Science Talk
This special edition of Café Scientifique will bring together international researchers through the Reach High Scholars Programme, where they will chat about their work. Their research spans a variety of fields, ranging from medicine to engineering, having a common thread showing the impact of their research on society. Dr Joseph Vancell will discuss research he is currently conducting with older workers from various sectors of the Maltese labour force, highlighting gaps between younger and older workers and how distance e-learning can help adult learners. Dr Romina Briffa will be talking about colorectal cancer and the importance of different kinds of molecular biomarkers, while Dr Lorna Marie West will discuss medication wastage, laws and policies.
A panel discussion following the short presentations will focus on how science can lead to a better society.

Short Films
'Solar Cinema' is a mobile, solar powered cinema from The Netherlands, and 100% self-sustainable, without the need to use any electricity.
This will be a casual evening under the stars, starting off with a video presentation of the history of Evenings on Campus, by James Moffett.
After this, there will be the screening of 'Bon Voyage', a short film by Fabio Friedli, about emigrants who climb on to an overcrowded truck with a goal in mind – Fortress Europe, but who later have to deal with another brutal reality, that of the European handling of refugees.
This will be followed by 'Stranger in Paradise' by Guido Hendrikx, which will have its Malta Premiere during Evenings on Campus. Centred on the very topical subject of migration, this film is part acted (the intake officer is played by an actor) and part documentary, with the refugees playing themselves. The film is based mainly in a classroom of newly-arrived refugees who learn how complex Europe is, and which reflects on the power relations between Europeans and refugees in a candid way.

Comedy
Uncle Wilfred is dead. His will has not been found and so all his vast fortune is tied up with bureaucratic red tape. Two cousins, Anthony and Zaren who do not like each other at all, along with their significant others, have had the idea to break into their deceased uncle’s remote country house to look for a copy of the will. They intend to use the will if it’s in their favour or destroy it if it is not. So, one stormy night both couples break into the old house to carry out their mean plan. However, they both did not expect the other couple to be there. Nor did they expect their old uncle’s stories of a ghostly bride wandering the rooms at night to be true.
Warning: Strobe lights will be used during the play.
