Do you know your Pistacia from your Pine, your Carob from your Caper, or your Buckthorn from your Bay Laurel? The Institute of Earth Systems invites you to come and test your knowledge on our display of selected local plants.
The Maltese islands are home to a number of endemic and indigenous plants, many of which form part of the Mediterranean Sclerophyll Series or scrublands. Evergreen woodland (Bosk), maquis (Makkja), garrigue (Xagħri) and steppe (Steppa) are the four main vegetation communities of this dynamic series. Some of these native plants have medicinal properties or are a source of essential vitamins and minerals. Others can act as botanical mechanisms against harmful organisms and can be employed as natural pest control agents.
Visit our stand to meet our team and learn more about the rich diversity of plant species that occur around our islands, and their uses in medicine and agriculture.
