October is Mental Health Awareness Month, with 10th October being World Mental Health Day.
To raise awareness, a group of mental health nursing students from the Department of Mental Health will be setting up a bake sale on Tuesday 22 October at Quadrangle between 10:00 and 14:00. A public lecture, entitled 'Self-care is an act of self-love', delivered by Dr Michael Galea, an experienced clinical psychologist, will be held in the KSU Common Room at 11:30.
The proceeds will go towards St Jeanne Antide Foundation (SJAF) and the student placement fund. St Jeanne Antide Foundation is a registered social purpose non-profit organisation. It aims to provide professional support services to very vulnerable individuals suffering due to very difficult life circumstances.
The mission of the Foundation is to be present for individuals who need someone to listen to them with compassion, support them in the restoration of their dignity, and guide them towards self-reliance and fulfilment of their potential. Among the plethora of services offered, St Jeanne Antide Foundation provides its service-users with mental health support, aids women who have suffered domestic violence and allows families to benefit from social work and therapy.

Moreover, the student placement fund is an innovation project overseen by the Department of Mental Health and its students, with the aim of giving mental health nursing students the financial ability to carry out interventions with the clients during the mental health placements. Such interventions range from art and play therapy-inspired sessions to gardening or cooking sessions.
Join the Mental Health Nursing students, next Tuesday, and give a helping hand in their mission to support individuals with mental health ailments.
