Prof. McLaughlin teaches Italian language and literature, especially Dante, Renaissance literature from Petrarch to Tasso, post-war fiction with a particular focus on Calvino, the Italian short story, and Translation Studies. His studies, many of which are the standard works in the field, include Literary Imitation in the Italian Renaissance (London: Clarendon Press, 1995) and Italo Calvino, Writers of Italy (Edinburgh University Press, 1998). Professor McLaughlin is also the English translator of Umberto Eco’s On Literature (2005) as well as Italo Calvino’s Why Read the Classics (1999), Hermit in Paris (2005), Into the War (2011), Letters 1941-1985 (2013) and Collection of Sand (2013).
