Professor John Portelli, a researcher and educationist of international reputation will lead this year’s CPD seminar on Critical teaching and student engagement
This workshop will clarify the meaning of teaching critically, its underlying assumptions and implications for practice. It will also focus on how to engage students meaningfully without either lowering standards or falling into a deficit mentality. Some concrete examples will be explored. The two-hour online session will be a combination of mini-lectures and interactive discussions/conversations.

John P. Portelli, a former school teacher in Malta, is a Full Professor in the Department of Social Justice Education, OISE, University of Toronto. His areas of research are vast and include quality assurance, student engagement, equity, diversity, educational policy and social justice education. He has authored, co-authored and co-edited 22 books which include - four bilingual collections of poetry, a collection of poetry in Maltese, an edited collection of contemporary Maltese poetry, two collections of short stories (Everyday Encounters and ON: Word and Deed, 2019), and a novel (Everyone but Fajza, now available in English). He settled in Canada in 1977.
