Din is-sena l-attivitajiet ta’ Science in the City ser ikunu kollha online minħabba n-numru ta’ każi attivi ta’ COVID-19 li hawn fil-pajjiż. Il-Junior College qed jipparteċipa f’dan l-avveniment online permezz ta’ numru ta’ attivitajiet immirati lejn udjenzi varji minn tfal żgħar sa’ adulti. Dawn l-attivitajiet ġew ippreparati mill-istaff u l-istudenti ta’ diversi dipartimenti fil-Kulleġġ. Minbarra hekk hemm ukoll rokna imsejħa Researcher’s Corner fejn fiha wieħed jista' jsib riċerka li għamlu xi membri tal-istaff. Ħudu gost!
Due to the changing situation in Malta and the rise in the number of active cases of COVID-19 on the island, it has been decided that this year's Science in the City festival will move to an online festival. Junior College will be participating in this year’s online event through a number of online activities for different age groups, from young kids to adults. These have been prepared by staff and students of different departments. There is also a Researcher’s Corner which showcases research carried out by some members of our staff. Enjoy!
Ingħaqdu mad-Dipartiment tal-Biologija biex tiskopru dak li aħna magħmulin minnu. Kull ċellola f’ġisimna u f’ġisem kull organiżmu ħaj, fiha d-DNA. Din hija r-riċetta bl-ingredjenti kollha li għandna bżonn biex inkunu dak li aħna. Se titgħallmu dwar din il-molekola affaxxinanti billi tagħmlu numru ta’ taħriġiet li ħejjejna għalikom u fl-aħħar tkunu tistgħu ukoll tagħmlu esperiment id-dar fejn mill-frotta tal-banana toħorġu d-DNA tagħha.
Join the Department of Biology to explore what makes you, You! Every single cell in our body and of every living organism contains DNA. DNA is a recipe that gives all the ingredients needed to make you. You will be learning about this fascinating molecule through a number of tasks we have prepared, and also to top it all up we will extract DNA from bananas.
Read the following information depending on your age group to explore about DNA:
Now that you have read and learnt about the DNA, try out these activities:
- Colour It In (recommended age under 10 years)
- Word Search / (Answers) (recommended age 7+)
- DNA Extraction Information (This document & Video will give you the items needed for the DNA extraction experiment and some background information)

It-tema ta' din is-sena hija Engage, Empower and Enable. Id-dipartiment tagħna ħaseb biex jippreżenta logħba, li ħadmu fuqha studenti tagħna li jagħmlu parti mill-Hack Club. Dan il-klabb huwa wieħed mill-programmi li d-dipartiment joffri lill-istudenti biex jiżviluppaw il-ħiliet tagħhom, lil hinn mill-element akkademiku. Din il-logħba nbniet mill-ġdid fuq logħba li kienet teżisti fl-antik fuq il-kaxxi tal-logħob u l-kompjuters ta' dak iż-żmien. Nistidnukom taraw il-vidjow promozzjonali, il-vidjow tal-logħba, taqraw l-istruzzjonijiet u tilagħbu l-logħba!
In line with this year's theme: Engage, Empower and Enable, our department is presenting a digital game created entirely by our students. The game was created by a team of four students who attended the College's Hack Club, which is one of the Enrichment Programme Units offered. Using the Unity Game engine, the students recreated an old arcade game. We invite you to watch the promotional video, as well as the game trailer, go through the manual and play the game!

Id-Dipartiment tax-Xjenza Ambjentali u Edukazzjoni Fiżika ħaseb biex jipprepara numru ta’ filmati qosra mmirati għal studenti ta’ bejn is-6 u 12 il-sena sabiex jifhmu aktar ir-relazzjoni li teżisti bejn l-isport u x-xjenza. Dawn il-filmati għandhom iservu wkoll sabiex l-istudenti jkunu attrezzati b’eżerċizzi differenti li jistgħu jagħmlu mill-kumdità ta’ darhom. Ippruvawhom u ħudu gost!
This year the Department of Environmental Science and Physical Education is presenting a number of clips aimed at students between 6 and 12 years of age, in order to help them better understand the relationship between sports and science. Department of Geography and Home Economics
Il-worksheets ġew ippreparati mid-Dipartiment tal-Ġeografija u l-Home Economics biex joħolqu kuxjenza fost iċ-ċittadini żgħar dwar l-importanza tal-għażla tal-ikel tagħhom bħala konsumaturi. Meta wieħed jaħdem dawn l-eżerċizzji jiskopri d-dinja wara t-tikketta, u japprezza l-importanza tal-għażla bil-għaqal tal-prodotti li jikkonsma mhux biss minħabba raġunjiet personali marbuta ma’ stil ta' ħajja u saħħa, iżda anki minħabba kuxjenza soċjali bħala ċittadin globali. Il-worksheets huma adattati għal adolexxenti u żgħażagħ bejn l-10 snin u s-16-il sena, u kull min jinteressah ikun jaf x’hemm wara t-tikketta ta’ prodott tal-ikel.
The worksheets set by the Geography and Home Economics Department aim to create awareness among the young citizens visiting the Junior College SITC webpage about the importance of their choice of food as consumers. As one works out the activities one will discover the world behind the food label and appreciate the importance of one’s choice of food which should not be determined only by personal reasons related to a healthy lifestyle, but also through the social awareness as a global citizen. The worksheets are suitable for young people between 10 and 16 years and whoever is interested in learning more about what is beyond the packaging of a food item.

Id-Dipartiment tal-Matematika qiegħed jippreżenta din l-attività fejn fiha nsolvu problema interessanti dwar il-biljard. Għandna boċċa tal-biljard fir-rokna ta' mejda tal-biljard. Din il-boċċa nolqtuha b'ċertu angolu u nħalluha għaddejja fuq il-mejda. Jekk il-boċċa jkollha biżżejjed saħħa biex tkompli għaddejja sakemm issib pocket, ġo liema pocket tispiċċa? X'jiġri jekk nibdlu l-kobor tal-mejda? Tista' tkun taf minn qabel ġo liema pocket taqa' l-boċċa, hi kemm hi kbira l-mejda? Ippruvaw din l-attività u tkunu tistgħu twieġbu dawn il-mistoqsijiet intom stess!
The Department of Mathematics is presenting the following activity in which we solve an interesting problem about the game of billiards. We have a cue ball in the corner of a billiard table that is allowed to move freely on the table after being shot at a certain angle. If the cue ball has enough force to keep moving until reaching a pocket, which pocket will it fall into? What if the size of the table is changed? Can you predict which pocket the cue ball will fall into, given any table dimensions? Try out this activity and you will be able to answer these questions yourselves!

Qatt staqsejt lilek innifsek “Għaliex kalamita tiġbed lill-oħra? Kif taħdem boxxla? Għaliex l-għamara tiġbed it-trab aktar ma tfarfar?” u elf mistoqsija oħra. Jekk int 'l fuq minn 13-il sena nistednuk issegwi l-vidjow bl-esperimenti u jekk għandek it-tfal żgħar u trid trawwem fihom l-imħabba għax-xjenza, allura nistednuk issegwi l-vidjow u tilgħab il-logħob ibbażat fuq ix-xjenza ma’ wliedek. Ħudu gost!
Have you ever asked yourself “Why does a magnet attract another one? How does a compass work? Why does furniture attract dust the more you polish it?” and many other questions. If you are older than 13 years of age, then you are invited to watch some experiments on our video. Furthermore, if you have young children at home and would like to expose them to the idea that Physics is fun, then watch the video (3 to 12 years old), construct the games and play. Have a nice time!
