Did you know the barrel cactus is also known as Mother-in-Law's Seat?

Mother-in-Law Day is celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday in October in many countries across the world. It was created to honour the important role that mothers-in-law play in family life.

On this special occasion, Mr Matthew Calleja, Research Support Officer at the Institute of Earth Systems, talks about the barrel cactus, which is housed at the Argotti Botanic Gardens & Resource Centre in Floriana.

In Maltese, this rare plant, which is armed with golden yellow spines, is referred to as ‘Is-Siġġu tal-Kunjata’ (Mother-in-Law’s Seat).
