Preparing for World Food Day: Choosing our food

Ahead of World Food Day, which is celebrated on 16 October, the Office of the Pro-Rector for Strategic Planning and Sustainability is pleased to announce the launch of a short publication entitled Choosing our Food.

Stemming from one of the initiatives undertaken earlier this year on the occasion of Sustainable Gastronomy Day (18 June), over 130 members of staff responded to a short survey which had been disseminated across the UM Community . Staff were invited to share concerns associated with food choices, the importance or otherwise attributed to food labels and considerations made when purchasing food.

A summary of the responses has been collated and is being shared with a view to raising awareness about food consumption, health issues and related concerns. This brief insight into habits, practices and realities will hopefully lead to informative workshops, panel-discussions and debates, as well as nudge us all into action to make healthier choices for the sake of our well-being.

Another initiative which took off on Sustainable Gastronomy Day has led to another exciting project promoting sustainability and healthy eating.  The publication focusing on sourcing and using local produce will be released next week. Watch this space.
