With the present work, the series ‘Documentary Sources of Maltese History’ is now seeing its sixteenth volume, the sixth in the sub-series dedicated to the Chancery records held at Palermo. The first five volumes covered the years 1259-1515.
The present volume covers the years 1515-1530. These were crucial years for the Island because during this time Malta was handed over to the Hospitaller Order of St John. The documents in this volume cover and discuss two broad themes: the Administration of the Diocese of Malta and the transfer of the Maltese Islands to the Order of St John. Other documents which follow provide insights into everyday life.
Without doubt, the documents relating to the months immediately before the Order took over Malta are of utmost importance as they relate to a much understudied aspect of Malta’s history. The documents confirm that even before formally establishing itself in Malta, the Order of St John had some concerns about the adequate water supply of wheat provisions from Sicily and the defence of the Maltese Islands (from the Foreword, Prof. Carmel Cassar).
