Professor Lilian M. Azzopardi, Head of Department of Pharmacy of the University of Malta was an invited speaker at the workshop by the European Commission entitled ‘EU Minimum harmonised training for pharmacists- time for an update?’
The workshop held on 28 June 2021 was organised to present the findings of an EU-led exercise to map and assess developments in pharmacy education and propose updates to Directive 2005/36/EC.
Professor Azzopardi was asked to present the experience from the University of Malta with regards to the teaching of Pharmacy Practice as a key component in pharmacy curricula. Professor Azzopardi described the implementation of Pharmacy Practice study units within the course programmes leading to a degree of pharmacy at the University of Malta.
The learning outcomes from Pharmacy Practice of supporting the integration of science and practice skills within an inter-professional context, was identified by the EU exercise as an essential component. The long-standing experience and excellence in the teaching of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Malta was presented as a model of how the component of Pharmacy Practice can be effectively included in the programme to establish a patient-centred pharmacy education.
