The former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Malta, Professor Frederick Fenech passed away on October 9 2021. Professor Fenech left a mark with his dedication and work in Medicine throughout his years.
The University salutes the memory of Professor Fenech who was laid to rest yesterday.
Professor Fenech was born in 1934 in Birkirkara. In 1955, at the age of 21, Professor Fenech completed his journey towards becoming a medical doctor. It was very rare during that time that one becomes a medical doctor at such a young age. He continued his journey in general medicine in the United Kingdom and eventually was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians as well as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
He was appointed as a Senior Physician and Professor of Medicine in 1970 and 1974 respectively. In 1977 Professor Fenech was appointed as the first Professor of Medicine at the University of Kuwait.
On his return to the Maltese islands, in 1987 Professor Fenech continued his career at the University of Malta and became the Dean of the Faculty. He served as a Dean for eight years (1988 - 1996).
Despite his retirement, Professor Fenech remained active in the community and his work never stopped. In 2001, he was appointed Director of the International Institute on Ageing, in which he served from 2001 to 2007.
Professor Fenech will always remain in our hearts as a renowned physician and a hard working doctor. He will always be remembered at the University of Malta.
