Professor Sandra C. Buttigieg, Head of Department of Health Systems Management & Leadership, delivered one of the two Keynote presentations at the 17th European Conference on Management, Leadership and Governance (ECMLG) that was held at the University of Malta, Valletta Campus on 8 and 9 November this year.
The title of the keynote was 'Leading and Managing Health Systems during COVID-19 Times'. Professor Buttigieg discussed the importance of, and the impact that, leadership, management and governance have had on the response of health systems to the pandemic. She also delved into the various styles of leadership that were encouraged at the time of the acute crisis and how leaders should plan to move on and adapt to the new reality.
In particular, Professor Buttigieg emphasized that for leaders and managers to move away from crisis management, they should use systems thinking which shifts the response from merely firefighting to high leverage characterised by change in behavior with minimal unintended consequences.
