Between 5 and 12 April, the 2nd year students of the BSc (Hons) in Science for Education and Communication visited the Glasgow Science Centre for their placement as part of the course requirement. Glasgow Science Centre is a world-class interactive science centre in its 20th year of operations that attracts thousands of visitors annually. It comprises a science mall with various exhibits, a planetarium, an IMAX theatre and very recently a professional flight simulator (only the 2nd to be installed in a science centre).
The students had the opportunity to experience and work closely with the GSC staff from the front-of-house to the planetarium. They were also given the unique opportunity to operate and assist in the flight simulator. All in all, it was a very enriching experience which will certainly contribute to the professional development of our students as science communicators and educators. The students were accompanied by Dr Edward Mifsud who coordinates the student placements.
Special thanks goes to the GSC staff for their hospitality and assistance, particularly to Mr Steve Owens, Ms Sharon Mac Nab and Ms Florence Edmond without whom the visit wouldn’t have been possible. During the visit, Dr Mifsud and Mr Owens discussed possible future collaboration and cooperation between the University of Malta and the Glasgow Science Centre.
