The series of site visits organised for students reading for bachelors and masters degrees at the Faculty of the Built Environment continued this week with a visit at the E&L steel factory in Hal Far and another site visit for masters students at the SR Technics newly inaugurated hangar facility at Hal Farrug.
Structural steel assembly and fabrication processes were shown to the students at the E&L Factory together with a tour of the factory by Managing Director Edward Camilleri. The students also had the opportunity to meet members of the E&L Design Office and discuss various aspects of structural steel design and software.
At SR Technics, the students were given a tour around the project by Perit David Micallef (iAS Architect and Project Manager) assisted by his project management team.
The six-bay hangar at SR Technics is considered a centre of excellence in the field of aircraft maintenance and repair for narrow body aircraft. With an investment of 40,000 square meters, SR Technics has expanded its space so that today it can carry out repair and maintenance work on six B737 and A320 aircraft at the same time.
The students were exposed to the design aspects of the state-of-the-art hangar structure as well as the logistical challenges arising from this project.
These site visits are being organised by the Society of Architecture & Civil Engineering Students (SACES) and Senior Visiting Lecturer Perit Mark Borg from Innovative Architectural Structures (iAS)
