Professor Georgios N. Yannakakis, Director of the Institute of Digital Games at the University of Malta, is the new Editor in Chief (EiC) of the IEEE Transactions on Games journal. The journal is the premier venue for technical games research.
The appointment of Prof. Yannakakis as the EiC in the prestigious IEEE Transactions series is a recognition for the world-class research profile of the Institute of Digital Games and puts the University of Malta at the very center of the game research map. The Institute has most recently been ranked among the top 10 technical games research institutes and top 25 among game design schools, by the Princeton Review. The young IEEE Transactions on Games in its 13th volume has an impact factor of 1.9, an h- index of 45 and a Cite Score of 4.5. The journal issues papers on all scientific, technical and engineering aspect of games.
That includes AI for games, games for AI, human computer interaction, simulated worlds and the metaverse, game user research and player modelling, graphics and animation, games as digital twins, educational and serious games, entertainment computing, software engineering in games, affective computing in games, computational game creativity, game analytics, artificial general intelligence, extended, virtual and augmented reality, virtual cinematography, player experience studies, streaming and eSports technology, games for change, game-based learning, game psychophysiology, game data visualization, big game data, game design and game evaluation, music and visual art in games, and game interfaces.

Prof. Tanya Sammut-Bonnici, Pro-Rector Strategic Planning and Enterprise and Chair of the Institute of Digital Games, said that the faculty members at the institute are proactive in publishing research. The Institute is among the top 10 in technical games research globally and has engaged in a high volume of international research projects. There were 260 papers published in recent years and citations stand as 22,0000 with an h-index of 170 collectively.
