The Department of Criminology students participated in a crime scene simulation exercise organised by the Armed Forces of Malta in association with Hon. Magistrate Elaine Mercieca and the Malta Police Force Forensics Team.
The exercise involved detonation of three Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) followed by crime scene investigation by the Forensics Team and inquiring magistrate proceedings. Students participated in the investigation by identifying and marking evidence. The students were also given the opportunity to operate a military bomb disposal robot, a scanning drone, and to don an explosive ordnance disposal suit.
The exercise was part of CRI2011 – Practical Approaches to Research Methodology, an undergraduate course delivered to B.A. Criminology students with the aim of providing real world experience of crime scene investigation, evidence gathering and court proceedings.
The course is coordinated by Prof. Gordon Sammut with lectures from Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi (AFM), Inspector Charlot Casha (MPF), Hon Mgst Elaine Mercieca (Judiciary), Prof. Saviour Formosa and Prof. Alfred J Vella.
