Dr Andrew Decelis has recently been appointed as Chair of SportMalta for a three year term.
Dr Decelis is Senior Lecturer and currently the Director of the Institute for Physical Education & Sport at the University of Malta. He is also Head of the Department of Health, Physical Education, & Consumer Studies within the Faculty of Education. He holds a doctorate in Sport, Exercise, and Health from the University of Bristol, and has authored and co-authored several academic papers in this field. Dr Decelis is also a member of the European Commission Expert Group on Green Sport and the Bureau of the Council of Europe’s Enlarged partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) and a former member of the EU Commission Expert Group on Skills and Human Resources in Sport.
Apart from being a keen sportsperson himself, he also served as the Vice-President of the Malta Handball Association for 8 years and headed the Association for Physical Education between 2011 and 2021.
When he was asked to comment on his appointment and immediate goals, Dr Decelis replied: 'I am very honoured to be entrusted with this responsibility, and committed to working towards the development of local sport at all levels, from grassroots to elite, while ensuring it is inclusive and for all, and increasing participation in physical activity for people of all ages and in different settings.'
