Last May 3 at the premises of the Malta Society of Arts, Valletta, Professor François Soulages from the Université de Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis along with the Department of French of the Faculty of Arts, University of Malta, organised an international conference bearing the title Photographie et interprétation.
Our Department of French is happy to announce the publication of the proceedings of this conference by L’Harmattan publishers in Paris, France, in their series: “Collection Eidos série photographie”, 131 p., 17 €50. The book is entirely in the French language.
Photographie et interprétation contains ten papers in all, three of which, as can be expected, deal with the theory of photography. The authors of three more papers are students from South Korea doing their PhD in photography. Two more papers deal with poetry or literature books interspersed with photos. In the 20th century some fiction authors combine text with visual art.
Last May’s conference was inaugurated by Her Excellency Agnes van der Mühll, Ambassador for France in Malta. Photographie et interprétation has a preface by the French Ambassador who stresses how timely the publication of the proceedings are in a world where photography plays such a vital role in the media. Broaching the subject of geopolitics she adumbrates the critical situation today both in Eastern Europe and on the African continent.
