Prof. Raymond Galea, Associate Professor at the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology within the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery, has been appointed as Commissioner for Health. Prof. Galea succeeds Mr Charles Messina, whose two terms as Commissioner for Health expired.
The Parliamentary Ombudsman appointed the Commissioner for Health in terms of the power conferred on him by Articles 17 A (1) and (2) of the Ombudsman Act 1995 as amended. The appointment is for a five-year term with effect from 13 September 2022.
The Commissioner for Health, like the Ombudsman, is an autonomous Officer of Parliament and enjoys the same independence and security of tenure. The Commissioner works independently but coordinates the work with the Office of the Ombudsman.
