A mobile boiler has been installed at the University of Malta, Msida Campus.
This mobile boiler is one of a number, brought over by the Admiralty, and employed at the Dockyard to provide low pressure steam at 15/20 psi (1 to 1.5 bar) for domestic use (washing, cooking and space heating) to ships lying in drydock.
The mobile boiler was deposited in a scrapyard more than 40 years ago. It was set for scrap but was recovered through the timely intervention of members of the Malta Industrial Heritage Association (MIHA) during August 2022. The mobile boiler was purchased through donations of MIHA members and transported with the support of Polidano Group. Palumbo Shipyards supported through blasting and the application of protective coats of paint.
It is placed for permanent display as a representative element of Industrial Heritage at the University of Malta by MIHA with the support of the Rector, the Industrial Heritage Platform and the Estates, Facilities and Capital Development Directorate of the University of Malta.
This mobile boiler, located in the area next to the Dun Karm monument at the UM Msida Campus, is intended to communicate the importance of the Industrial Heritage of the Maltese Islands.
