The docks are Malta's oldest and largest enterprise. Over the centuries, they have witnessed different vessels, from wooden galleys to supertankers. The technology involved in ship repair has also been transformed, as have the associated work-related risks and hazards.
Students who have recently started a part-time evening programme leading to a bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety (OHS) undertook a study visit to Palumbo SuperYacht facility in Cottonera on Saturday morning, 3rd December. There, they could witness first-hand the unique environment in which ship repair takes place, and in particular the refitting of superyachts. These docks and some of their supporting infrastructure date back to the mid-1800s.
The students were accompanied by UM sociologist Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino and were kindly taken around the premises by Palumbo SY Manager, Engineer Simon Zammit.
