Another Graduation Season at UM is upon us, and it’s time to celebrate the hard work of our students!
The Programme kicked off with two Thanksgiving Masses, held on Monday 11 November and Tuesday 12 November 2024 respectively, with the first one being attended by the President of Malta, H.E. Myriam Spiteri Debono.
This time round, 1,875 students are being awarded their undergraduate degree, with the majority of them (61.4%) being females, 38.4% being males and 0.2% Gender X.
They will be receiving their diploma or degree certificates during one of 10 graduation ceremonies, taking place between Thursday 14 and Friday 20 November. Graduands will be attending ceremonies at 14:00 and at 17:00, according to their respective course. Postgraduate graduation ceremonies for 2024 will be held in March of 2025.
Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy graduates were the first ones to celebrate on Thursday 14 November. During the first ceremony, Prof. Marie Briguglio from the Department of Economics addressed those present, and talked about the importance of making wellbeing the goal in one’s life. "Inflation, housing affordability are a key concern to young people, and the privatisation of public goods has made it increasingly difficult to be a ‘have-not’. So yes, money matters. But in truth what we all want is not money, but what money is supposed to give us: happiness".
Fresh graduate, Leanne Micallef, who graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accountancy and Insurance & Risk Management, also addressed the students, focusing on the value that involvement in student organisations added to her university experience and holistic development, as well as on the need to never take one’s access to education and right to express one’s opinion for granted.
The same Faculty accounts for the highest number of graduands, seeing no less than 244 students celebrate their achievements.
Other Faculties with a high number of graduates are: The Faculty of Health Sciences with 234 graduands, the Faculty for Social Wellbeing also with 234 graduands, the Faculty of Arts with 214 graduands and the Faculty of Laws with 162 graduands.
The ceremonies, being physically held at the Sir Temi Zammit Hall at the Msida Campus, are also being livestreamed on the University of Malta Facebook Page, Linkedin Page and YouTube Account.
UM Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella, congratulated the graduates on the attainment of their degrees in their respective fields, and said that while he hopes they will play a huge positive role in society in the near future, he also encouraged them to speak their mind boldly, truthfully and without hesitation.
