During the month of June, the Department of Artificial Intelligence within the University of Malta's Faculty of Information and Communication Technology delivered a series of AI information sessions to a group of Ukrainian refugees. The sessions, coordinated by Mr Mark Gatt at the Franciscan Welfare Association in Qawra, aimed to provide participants with a general understanding of Artificial Intelligence and its growing role in various sectors. Prof. Matthew Montebello together with two of his Research Support Officers, Mr Gabriel Borg and Mr Karl Cini, delivered these sessions.
In addition to the refugees, their English teachers and social workers, together with a number of parishioners and local volunteers also attended the sessions. Participants expressed great interest in the topics covered, finding the sessions highly informative and insightful. Many appreciated the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge about AI technologies, and how these may impact work, education, and society at large.
The sessions were kindly hosted at the Ronald McDonald House Charity in Qawra, which offers excellent classroom facilities and serves as a welcoming space for anyone who wishes to contribute to the wellbeing of others. The AI Department extends its sincere thanks to Mr Mark Gatt, the Djakonija St Francis of Assisi community in Qawra, and the Ronald McDonald House Charity for their support and collaboration in making these sessions possible.
The Department of Artificial Intelligence remains committed to using knowledge and expertise to serve the wider community, fostering inclusion, education, and empowerment through initiatives such as these.
