The Erasmus+ Joint Master on Global Policies for Educational Development (GLOBED) was formally launched at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) on 1 October 2015.
The 2-year Masters brings together the Autònoma, the University of Malta’s Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Educational Research (EMCER), and the University of Oslo, together with the University of Amsterdam as associate partner. An international faculty—with expertise and first hand experience in education for development in different regions of the world—have joined forces and resources to offer a unique postgraduate interdisciplinary course that aims to respond to the challenges that education faces in the context of globalisation.
Taught components of the course, delivered at the four campuses, include state-of-the-art research methods, theories of social justice, a critical evaluation of development and aid organizations, and a focus on global inequalities, on education in conflict zones, on comparative perspectives on children, and on educational reform. During the second year of the course, students are placed as interns with an aid agency involved in delivering educational services in the global South, and carry out fieldwork on a dissertation topic of their choice. All components of the Masters set out to explore alternative education policy strategies for social and economic development.
The 2015 edition of GLOBED has enrolled 21 candidates selected from over 180 eligible applicants from across the world. The first cohort includes students from Bangladesh, Chile, China, Colombia, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, UK, USA, Venezuela and Vietnam. 13 of the non-EU students are benefiting from a full ERASMUS+ scholarship.
